Kazuo was apprehensive about my idea. He knew of Takeno's reputation for neutrality, but he feared Nurarihyon's reach. The Bureau seemed like a distant second in terms of his concerns.

"You're sure about this?" Kazuo asked as we walked towards the back entrance of the udon restaurant. "You trust Takeno?"

I waggled my hand in the air. "In this matter, yes."

The tenome put his hands in his pockets, sighed. "This could do until I decide where to go next."

"What about Ban Ichi? Now that things are smoothed over with Hakuzōsu, you could duck into Ban Ichi until this blows over. Spend some time with Niwa."

"More than a few Yōkai have sought refuge there recently. But tempting as that is, I have no wish to bring danger to Niwa's doorstep."

"Of course."

Takeno had texted us after he'd ushered his staff out of the restaurant. We had the place to ourselves.

Kazuo presented himself, bowed low, and said, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Takeno-san."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Kazuo-san."

Kazuo took a seat in front of Takeno's desk. I stood by the door. The office was large and decorated minimally.

"Miller-san has informed me of your generous hospitality," the tenome said. "I am most grateful and will seek to repay you accordingly as soon as circumstances allow."

A nod from Takeno. "I'm afraid I am still working to provide sufficient protection for you. Given the short notice, I have summoned the resources I can. They should be arriving shortly. More will follow. I will lay my soul on the line to protect you. However, I must ask that you stay within the confines of this office. I cannot be responsible for your safety if you fail to follow my instructions."

"I understand," Kazuo replied.

"You may make yourself comfortable here. I have a private restroom behind that door. For your own benefit, please avoid manifesting and do not interact with my staff if at all possible. It would be much simpler if they did not know of your presence. I will bring you meals myself. Here is my cell phone number if you need to contact me. Any questions?"

The tenome shook his head. "No."

Madara flipped out, darted around, her head pointed behind me.

"I have a question," came a male voice from the hallway.

Nurarihyon stood in the doorway.
